I think he makes many good points, but forgets the most important one: just education will not solve problems. We have many experiences and examples where there were large groups of very educated people that failed to solve their societal problems. The reason for that is simple: education is a tool, but one should also be able to know, and understand, where that tool should be applied and why. Understanding why GSIs, TAs, lecturers, etc. strike around the country, and understanding that they need everyone's support, is absolutely crucial, and not something that can be so easily brushed off. The professor clearly feels strongly about his students, but he, unfortunately, falls into the fallacy of the very generation he represents: that problems, no matter how complex, can be solved through more education and more technology. Stemming from Descartes, this view has gotten us EXACTLY where we are right now. And if you look at people who have been most influential in trying to turn this ship around, and you look at where they come from, the vast majority do not hold elite degrees from famous universities. It takes other skills as well, those that our education system is ill equipped to deliver. So as much as formal classroom education is important, I wish he could realize that the strike is a priceless educational opportunity, a teachable moment if I ever saw one, to turn your students into citizens. And maybe to stop being quite so condescending, and trust that they can learn things via other means than just one's lectures. And I say this as a professor who has taught college level courses on both coasts and in very different universities, for the last 12 years.
