In fact there are two books inside each of the two Mangas I bough (see the link above). One is the actual picture story. I'm not a fan of mangas, but my daughter liked the Universe one. She hasn't read the second book, the Relativity, yet.
The second and quite independent part is a number of information chapters spread through the book. All together they present a quite good subject reference (I have an example in my LJ). Not a university course of course, but quite decent if you are after an explanation above an initial level.
Perhaps one of the ways to use such book is to read it together with a child. He or she reads the picture part and parents read the information part to be able to explain what is going on.
