Американцы убивают русскую национальную идею

В последние годы часто слышу про том, что России нужна новая национальная идея. Лично мое мнение: русская национальная идея состоит в получении денег из воздуха. Могу подтвердить множеством примеров, начиная от русских народных сказок и заканчивая экстремальным количеством математиков и композиторов на душу населения - и ничего плохого здесь нет, наоборот, эту идею можно переформулировать в прогрессивную service-oriented economy, в терминах IPCC это будет сценарий SRES- B1. Видимо именно поэтому появившаяся в начале 90-х идея зарабатывать деньги сажая деревья и продавая поглощенный СО2 капиталистам в виде углеродных кредитов пользовалась в некоторых организациях большим интересом, и кое какие деньги были действительно освоены. Но публикации подобные сегодняшней эту национальную идею, видимо, похоронят.

Сегодняшняя статья в PNAS обсуждает реакцию климата на крупномасштабные вырубки лесов. Авторы показали, что, несмотря на дополнительный выброс СО2 в атмосферу, температура в среднем по земному шару упадет. Причина - увеличение альбедо. Наиболее выгодным с точки зрения уменьшения температуры является вырубка всех бореальных лесов и сохранение лесов в тропиках. Так как это далеко не первая статья на тему (но впервые хорошо подкрепленная модельными результатами), на национальной идее получения денег из воздуха переделыванием углерода в древесину, видимо, в долгосрочной перспективе прийдется поставить крест. Для особо интересующихся вопросом, возможность получения кредитов за поглощение углекислого газа деревьями покрывается частями 3.3 и 3.4 Протокола Киото, а возможность получения за это денег - частью 6.

hmmm... well, yes, you are correct, although countries that joined Annex I after Annex B targets were announced are still considered Annex I but are not in Annex B (I believe Kazakhstan is one of them). But yes, overall you're right. I'm sufficiently humbled :-)

As for forest carbon losses- I've seen that paper, and the one thing that bothered me about it was that there was very little discussion of methodology of harvest effect on soil carbon. Although they noted that bole removal was significantly different than whole tree removal (only bole removal results in an increase in C whereas whole tree removal results in decrease of C) they did not discuss the physical disturbance to the soils from large scale intensive logging operations, which in a lot of cases result in massive disturbance to the soil floor, akin to the changes resulting from plowing. Such disturbance is likely to affect soil carbon dynamics in the short term. The other aspect that is difficult to quantify is that soil carbon is not a homogeneous pool, and just because there is x grams of carbon per y kg of soil in both sites does not mean that they are equivalent. In a lot of cases the carbon that is in the soil after a harvest is labile carbon, and not the recalcitrant stuff that has a long residence time... although I need to look into this more, I've mainly been focused on climate effects on non-disturbed ecosystems...

I agree that the large scale clearcutting operations similar to what have been used in our Motherland are a source of large carbon pulses. But this might be a good possibility to earn carbon credits? Just employ contemporary forest management and count in the carbon still stored in soils.

чёрт его знает, по названию вроде как идеи по carbon management а не по forest management... но в принципе да. я просто думаю что для того чтобы изучать очень разные тактики вырубки нужно смотреть в россии... так как там рубят лес, такогоздесь не найти уже лет 20-30 :-)

Да, это может быть очень интересно - и опять же таки с этой идеей Вам в тот же институтик академический, о котором я рассказывал, только говорить уже с бывшим его директором, сейчас он на должности типа главного консультанта.
