profprИнтересный оп-эд. Ответ Обамы на вопрос корреспондента о строительстве Исламского культурного центра рядом с Ground Zero: что-то вроде "у нас в стране свобода религий" привел к тому, что гораздо большее число людей считает его мусульманином.

Date: 2010-08-22 09:36 pm (UTC)... I recall my first important energy efficiency paper, published in the first "Annual Review of Energy" from 1976. There i took on ads from the Edison Eclectic Institute, the API, the American Eclectic Power Company, and a serious paper from the Chase Manhattan Energy Group (circal 1973) stating that aside from curtailment of some late night TV (and not without repercussions) there was no scope for energy conservation in the US. This mis-belief still grips much of the energy industry, the Republicans, and the other opponents of climate change action, and strikes fear in the heart of Americans: In fact, the message from the American Eclectic Power ad was "Generate Less Electricity - and Generate galloping unemployment" and the person holding a picket sign with that message was rather hip looking with bell bottoms.
... I think the climate opponents are very deeply motivated by money and ideology in a way that just does not appear in Europe. Seeing solar PV and wind all over rural Germany this past week was a real wake-up call. Not that these are even yet cost effective, but what country has the biggest ideological lobby AGAINST these -- the US! So reinterpreting what I said about WORDS, I believe we need to understand not only the $ motivations but the ideological ones as well, as they are unique to the US, and not even powerful in Canada across the border.
When I compared energy use and efficiency in Sweden with the US (Science 3 December 1976), Mobil oil wrote a 12 page "rebuttal" they sent to Paul Ehrlich -- they didn't say "Schipper and Lichtenberg said X, but our data show 2X", rather they just made up a completely distorted comparison for internal use then published a horrid Op-Ad in the Times in September 1977 (or 1978) that "proved", in the basis of an op ed written by a Univ of Chicago History Grad student with absolutely no experience, that there were really no international differences in energy use effiiciency (!). Both the student writer of the original op ed and Resources for the Future, to whom Mobil had shown a draft of the ad, said "foul" but they didn't seem to care.
Here we are 32 years later and nothing has changed? What have we not done right? ...
